When the clock hits 5 pm on a Friday, the city’s most spirited gaming bars light up with a blend of competitive energy and relaxed camaraderie. I’ve spent countless evenings testing each spot, and the ones below consistently deliver the best mix of atmosphere, game variety, and service.

Located at 12 Queen’s Road, this venue hosts a rotating lineup of board and card games. Last month, the staff introduced a new “Settlers of Catan” tournament that drew 30 players in a single evening. The bar’s signature cocktail, the “Dice Roll,” is a gin‑based drink with a splash of elderflower, served in a glass that doubles as a dice cup. The only downside? The Wi‑Fi drops to 1 Mbps during peak times, so streaming a game show isn’t feasible.

At 7 Baker Street, Dice & Draughts offers a dedicated gaming lounge with 18 vintage chess sets and a state‑of‑the‑art 4K projector for live esports streams. I tested the “Rapid Chess” room, and the 60‑second per move limit keeps the pace lively. The bar’s “Blackjack Bites” are a small, but surprisingly tasty, twist on classic nachos. If you’re a chess aficionado, this place is a must; if you prefer quieter spaces, the noise level can be a bit high during tournament nights.

Opened in 2016, The Cardboard Café has a 200‑seat capacity and a weekly “Cardboard Card‑Game Night” that features everything from Magic: The Gathering to Uno tournaments. The bar’s “Margarita Royale” is a citrus‑infused tequila drink that pairs well with the spicy tacos they serve. A minor inconvenience is the late‑night closing policy: the bar shuts down at 2 am, so late‑night gamers might need to leave early.

The Dice Den’s interior is a homage to classic arcade cabinets, with a 32‑player table for “Risk” and a dedicated slot‑machine‑style bingo room. I spent an evening playing a marathon of “Risk,” and the staff’s quick service kept the game flowing. The “Pina Colada Poker” cocktail is a sweet, coconut‑based drink that’s perfect after a long gaming session. The only hiccup? The bar’s barista uses a single espresso machine, so coffee orders can take up to 15 minutes during peak hours.

Boardroom offers an intimate setting with 12 tables for board games such as “Ticket to Ride” and “Pandemic.” Their “Sazerac Sazerac” is a bourbon‑based drink that complements the game’s strategic vibe. I found the staff exceptionally knowledgeable, often offering tips for beginners. However, the bar’s limited parking space can be a problem for those arriving by car after a long day.

With a 250‑seat capacity and a rooftop terrace, The Gaming Grotto hosts a weekly “Escape Room” event that blends physical puzzles with digital clues. The “Negroni Navigator” is a classic Negroni with a twist of orange zest, a favorite among the crowd. The only drawback is the bar’s high entrance fee of £15 during special events, which can be steep for casual visitors.

Keep an eye on the event schedules; many of these bars rotate their game themes weekly, ensuring that every visit feels fresh and exciting.

Most venues offer a mix of classic board games, card games, and themed tournaments, with new titles added regularly.

No, all bars provide a library of games you can play on the spot, though you can bring your own if you prefer.

Conclusion
